FREE DIRECTORIES - Reference USA

On this page, we will look at free directories.There are numerous free online recruiting services, but finding the links can be a challenge.

Two free directories, Yahoo and Google can be found at the following links.

Reference USA is perhaps the most comprehensive, easiest to use of directories in the search for companies. It is a directory service provided without charge through many public libraries, and it is an excellent tool for locating companies, as well as candidate addresses and phone numbers. Be sure to check availability in your area; because this is an expensive feature, not all libraries offer it.

Public libraries often extend free library cards to non-residents within their state or county, so if your local library does not carry Reference USA, try neighboring communities.

To log into Reference USA for free, you must go through a library web site, and your library card number is required. Logging in takes you to the Available Databases page shown below Choose U.S. Businesses.

You will then be given the options Quick Search or Custom Search. Our sample search will be for local companies in the food industry, so select Custom Search and click on Business Type in the menu found on the left side of the page you have opened.

Major Industry Group

The first step in building your list of local companies is to choose Major Industry Group from the Business Type menu, to bring up a very comprehensive list of industries. Choose your area of focus from this list.

If, for instance, you are a food industry recruiter, select MANUFACTURING, then Food and Kindred Products Mfrs. There you will find over fifty food products and bi-products from which to choose. Your search can be as broad (all food), or as narrow (say, only dairy) in scope as you wish. You are now ready to locate local companies involved in manufacturing the specific foods and/or related products of interest to you. Check all that apply.

Geography

Next, select Geography from the from the drop-down menu on the left, and click on Radius. Scroll down to the Radius Search box. Type in an address or a zip code, then indicate the distance from that address/zip code (0.1 to 150 miles) you desire to search.

At this point, you can click on either of two options found at the top right of the window : UPDATE COUNT, to find how many companies within your search radius match your search parameters; or VIEW RESULTS, to call up a list of those companies, with complete company information.

Should you desire to further refine your search, you can use the other: Company Name, Executives, Phone, etc. You can use the Update Count or View Results options at any time in the refinement process.
